1 Shelley Street Scoops Prestigious North American Architecture Award

Arguably one of the most advanced workplaces of its time, 1 Shelley Street, Sydney, Clive Wilkinson and Woods Bagot Architects have been presented with the American Architecture Award for 2011. A global benchmark for workplaces of tomorrow, 1 Shelley Street has revolutionised workplace design typologies of the twenty-first century.

"We're incredibly proud to be honoured with one of the globe's most prestigious architecture awards," said James Calder, Director of Research, Woods Bagot. "1 Shelley Street set out to implement radical change in the workplace; in essence reframing the requirements and performance of tomorrow's workplace."

One Shelley Street

Renowned for delivering and embracing an activity based work environment, key to unlocking the potential of the 1 Shelley Street space, was taking the building and manipulating it to suit the client's needs. The design of a central atrium within the building's core was key to achieving this. "The design of the workplace is a business lever that is often not pulled," James added. "Creating places for users that enhance creativity and business value was the driving force behind this project."

With an introduction of a central 10-storey atrium that showcases transparent cantilevered meeting pods, the building removes the typical barriers surrounding a business and movement is encouraged through the building via an industrial staircase. The work neighbourhoods, five to each floor, are structured around small communities of one hundred employees; all linking to the central atrium, where cross-pollination among business groups is encouraged through spontaneous encounters.

"This building with its tailor made settings combined with its mobile and wireless workforce, technology innovations, and environmental systems, has enabled the tenant to focus on collaboration and the sharing of ideas and knowledge, all of which ultimately benefits their clients," continued James. The interior has been designed to achieve a 5 Star green star rating to compliment the 6 Star green star base building - which utilises revolutionary technologies like harbor water cooling, chilled beams and zone controlled lighting.
