1 Shelley Street Scoops Prestigious North American Architecture Award

Arguably one of the most advanced workplaces of its time, 1 Shelley Street, Sydney, Clive Wilkinson and Woods Bagot Architects have been presented with the American Architecture Award for 2011. A global benchmark for workplaces of tomorrow, 1 Shelley Street has revolutionised workplace design typologies of the twenty-first century.

"We're incredibly proud to be honoured with one of the globe's most prestigious architecture awards," said James Calder, Director of Research, Woods Bagot. "1 Shelley Street set out to implement radical change in the workplace; in essence reframing the requirements and performance of tomorrow's workplace."

One Shelley Street

Renowned for delivering and embracing an activity based work environment, key to unlocking the potential of the 1 Shelley Street space, was taking the building and manipulating it to suit the client's needs. The design of a central atrium within the building's core was key to achieving this. "The design of the workplace is a business lever that is often not pulled," James added. "Creating places for users that enhance creativity and business value was the driving force behind this project."

With an introduction of a central 10-storey atrium that showcases transparent cantilevered meeting pods, the building removes the typical barriers surrounding a business and movement is encouraged through the building via an industrial staircase. The work neighbourhoods, five to each floor, are structured around small communities of one hundred employees; all linking to the central atrium, where cross-pollination among business groups is encouraged through spontaneous encounters.

"This building with its tailor made settings combined with its mobile and wireless workforce, technology innovations, and environmental systems, has enabled the tenant to focus on collaboration and the sharing of ideas and knowledge, all of which ultimately benefits their clients," continued James. The interior has been designed to achieve a 5 Star green star rating to compliment the 6 Star green star base building - which utilises revolutionary technologies like harbor water cooling, chilled beams and zone controlled lighting.

12-year-old Potsdam boy's death listed as homicide, according to police
Friday, October 28, 2011 - 12:20 pm
POTSDAM – The death of 12-year-old Garrett Phillips has been listed as a homicide, according to an initial autopsy report announced by Potsdam Village Police Friday.
According to a press release issued by Chief Edward Tischler, his department chose to wait until after Phillips' funeral this morning to make the announcement, out of respect for the boy's family.
Other autopsy information will not be released until the final report is received, the release states.
"Leads and evidence continue to develop and are being addressed," Tischler writes. "The Potsdam Police Department has not listed a suspect or person of interest in this investigation."
Tischler stated that the press will be contacted when new information is available.
The Potsdam Police Department requests that anyone who may have information that might assist in this investigation contact the department at 265-2121.
Garrett was found unconscious Monday afternoon in the apartment he shared with his mother at 100 Market St.
Police had gone to the apartment following a call from a neighbor saying a loud noise and moaning had been heard coming from the apartment.
Taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, the boy died after efforts to revive him failed.
The autopsy was done in Albany and the full results have not yet been made public.

POTSDAM -- A candlelight vigil is scheduled to take place tonight at 8 pm in front of A. A. Kingston Middle School to show community support for the family of 12-year-old Garret Philips, who was found dead Monday.
Organizers say the vigil is not a school-sponsored function; rather they say it is "a show of support for those who are working hard to bring closure and healing to this tragedy." The event is expected to last until 9:30 p.m., according to the Facebook page set up in Phillip's memory.
Meanwhile, the Potsdam Village Police Department has announced another press conference has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday to discuss what investigators have discovered about the death of Phillips.
The conference will be held in the Village of Potsdam board room.

POTSDAM – State police forensic investigators were busy collecting evidence today from inside and outside the 100 Market St. apartment where 12-year-old Garret Phillips was mortally injured Monday afternoon.
Police say they are trying to determine how the sixth-grader died.PhillipsPhillips
No one is in custody for the death of the boy, and if there are any suspects, Potsdam Police Chief Ed Tischler would not say when he met with the press this morning.
A.A. Kingston Middle School Principal Jamie Cruikshank acted quickly Monday night by issuing an email to parents of school-aged children at 9:26 p.m., informing them of Garret’s death and letting them know the school was prepared to handle grieving, confused students when they arrived this morning.
“Potsdam Central has a Crisis Intervention Team made up of professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents, and school personnel at difficult times such as this,” Cruikshank wrote. “We have counselors available for any student who may need or want help or any type of assistance surrounding this loss. We encourage you, as parents, to also feel free to use our resources.”
In a second email sent out at 9:43 a.m. this morning, Cruikshank said staff was providing middle school students with “activities to help them with this news.” He also said the Crisis Team was collaborating with grief counselor Mary Jones of Hospice.
Cruikshank asked parents to help the school and police “limit the amount of rumor circulating as this could be detrimental to students hearing these untruths.”
The alleged crime scene is cordoned off with yellow tape at a back left apartment in the large red brick building at North Country Manor apartments, 100 Market St. A crowd of vehicles had gathered earlier today in front of the building on Market Street.
The forensics team, wearing surgical masks, was collecting evidence from the roof above a first-floor doorway at the back of the house, while a long police ladder led up to a second-floor window with a screen that was bent outward, ripped from the frame. More officers in white jumpsuits were placing items in bags in the second-floor room.
Meanwhile, as news of the boy’s death spread, a steady stream of vehicles traveled slowly past the building as passengers tried to view the scene.
“We are trying to determine the cause of death,” Chief Tischler said at this morning’s press conference.
“We are interviewing friends, interviewing anyone” who might shed some light on the case, Tischler said.
Other than that, little information on the crime came out at the press conference. Tischler answered few questions.
Several State Police vehicles were in the parking lot at the police station. As reporters waited to hear from Chief Tischler, people were streaming in and out of the station.
Potsdam Schools Superintendent Patrick Brady, looking drawn, was seen leaving the station.
Uniformed troopers and some who were thought to be senior people from State Police Troop B headquarters in Ray Brook were in and out of the building.

Chief Tischler said the call reporting the incident came into the station at 5:10 p.m. Monday.
The Potsdam Police were helped at the scene yesterday by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office. They are being assisted by State Police and the DA’s office.
Tischler said his thoughts are with the family and friends of Garret Phillips.

From practical wardrobe accessories to objects of desire, this book is a stunning visual and fascinating historical reference exploring every aspect of shoes.

We use them to signal how fashionable we are, but beyond style, shoes can communicate our sexual desires, aesthetic sense, social status, and personality.

Within the pages of this lavishly illustrated book, you'll find the cultural mixed with the practical as the story of shoes unfolds from the foot-binding shoes of China to the infamous twenty-three-inch chopine platform shoe to the mens' shoes worn by dandies of the eighteenth century to the move toward conservatism that brought the Wellington boot to the irresistible sex appeal of the high heel to the cult rise of the sneaker.

Fashion Draft NYC

Yet again another great opportunity for college graduates that are interested in fashion to get a chance to get into the industry. I like how dexigner.com shows new competitions or opportunities going on for students and graduates out there.

Fashion Draft NYC, launched by New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and Parsons The New School for Design, is one of six initiatives recently announced by the City to support the long-term growth of the City's $55 billion fashion industry. It will bring a select group of top business-minded students from around the world to New York City to network and interview with fashion executives, with a chance to earn full-time, management-track positions within one of the participating New York-based companies.

Fashion Draft NYC is open to graduating college seniors who are interested in pursuing challenging, fast-paced business opportunities in New York's fashion industry, and who have related educational or internship experiences in business and/or fashion. It is anticipated that approximately 25 to 30 finalists will be selected to participate in the three-day program, which includes all travel, accommodation, and meals. Aside from the interviews, students will also participate in a behind-the-scenes company tour, hear a keynote address from a prominent fashion industry leader and attend a networking dinner.

Participating companies include Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Gilt, and LF USA, with additional companies still expected to join in the coming weeks and months. Fashion Draft NYC will take place in New York City from February 16-18, 2012, and is the second of the City's fashion initiatives, including Fashion Campus NYC, in which NYCEDC has partnered with Parsons.

"The fashion industry is a critical driver of our City's economy, and programs such as Fashion Draft NYC will ensure that this industry continues to grow," commented New York City Economic Development Corporation President Seth W. Pinsky. "By recruiting the best talent from around the globe, we will add to the already stellar roster of fashion professionals working here in the City, and further establish New York as the fashion capital of the world."

To participate in Fashion Draft NYC, students can apply at fashiondraftnyc.com. The application deadline is November 3, 2011. Semi-finalists will be chosen by mid-December and will be matched with participating companies for phone interviews. The participating companies will then select the semi-finalists with whom they would like to have follow-up interviews, and those students will be flown to New York City to participate in the Fashion Draft NYC weekend, with a chance to ultimately earn a job at the companies with which they interview.

The Roo’s Women Soccer Team Support The Passionately Pink For The Cure Program

Thursday, October 20, 2011-11:28am By: Dana Woods

(Canton, N.Y.) – On Wednesday Oct. 19 at 7p.m. the SUNY Canton women’s soccer team supported finding a cure for breast cancer in their “Kick for a Cure” soccer game; each girl wore pink socks as a tribute. They played Clarkson University on our home field and the women Knights won 2-0 against our Roo’s. Both teams were a success for their representation of a good cause in the battle against breast cancer.

It’s good for everyone to be aware about this disease. According to the North Country Now article Roo's women's soccer to "Kick for a Cure,” head coach Kate Thomas-Moody said, “I have 24 young women on my team right now and the statistics about breast cancer make awareness vital to me and my team and our amazing campus community.”

For this particular soccer game the Roo’s women soccer team helped out Susan G. Komen’s Passionately Pink for the Cure program and everyone at the game received prizes if they wore pink and donations that were made at the game went towards the program for breast cancer research, education, screenings and treatment programs in hopes of ending this battle forever.

There will also be a Pink Glove dance on Oct. 24 at SUNY Canton combined with the Campus Health Center. For more information contact Thomas-Moody at 386-7976.

Pleated Skirt Muslim Women Fashion Trend

Fall Fashion Trend Alert: Long Pleated Skirts for Muslim Women Fashion

Move over long frumpy skirts! Muslim women who are fashion conscious can now look to the long pleated skirts trend that is making waves on the fashion runways this Fall! Read on to find out more on how to incorporate this look into your fashion style this Fall.

“This season, pleated skirts have gotten a fashionable update from their schoolgirl or stuffy secretary association,” says stylist, Afiya Francisco. “Pleats are thinner and fabrics are lighter.”

How to wear it
“A fashion-forward option is to pair longer skirts with hip-length tops in contrasting fabrics,” says Francisco. Try it with a looser fit blouse that’s tucked in. Fit is crucial, says Francisco, so be sure that the pleats are sharp and lay flat. Vivid brights are a bold option but lighter taupe and grey is also polished and feminine.

Accessorize it
A medium to thin belt is a must. Try something in the same tone or a complementing shade, says Francisco.

Day to night
Wear it with slightly heavier shoes like wedges to counterbalance the floaty material – these are a great casual option for day. Feminine heels make a sophisticated option for evening. Fabrics like silk, chiffon and satin also look appropriate for evening events so opt for a skirt that can work for both.
